Interview!

January 9th, 2007

Yesterday morning, I spent a little bit of time filling in the resume builder at Gamasutra, figuring I would probably get about as much response from it as I used to get from Monster, which was no responses at all. So color me surprised when I discovered that six hours later, 2K Sports sent me and email with a subject line that had “Interview Request” in it.

Commence panicking!

I’ve only ever done a handful of interviews, and certainly none in the game industry. The first semi-real job I had, I camped out in a Software, Etc. for two days straight, practically, until the manager finally decided to show up, ask me a handful of questions and offer me a job. I had another interview a few years later for a computer equipment repair place that I didn’t get, probably because of a joke I made about breaking things that were already broken not being too big a deal right after he told me some of the pieces of equipment were worth tens of thousands of dollars. Maybe he didn’t think that was so funny. The last job I had, the interviewer told me at the beginning that I pretty much already had the job, as I was introduced to the company by one of my neighbors, who worked there. So I haven’t had all that much experience with “real” interviews and am understandably a little nervous about the whole concept.

I asked around to see if anybody had any advice on what to ask during the interview and was linked to The Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing, which is supposed to be for interviewers, rather than interviewees, but I found it to give me some good insight into what a good interviewer is looking for, as well as a spectacular read even ignoring the informative aspect of it. Now, a little more prepared, maybe I should actually call 2K Sports and make sure that this email is actually what I’m hoping it is before I get my hopes up too much.
